Cochlear Hybrid Hearing – An innovative hearing solution.
If you can hear some low-frequency sounds like a lawn mower or a barking dog, but not high-frequency sounds like a bird chirping or a
child’s voice – even while wearing hearing aids – Cochlea Hybrid Hearing* may be a solution. Hybrid Hearing amplifies the low-frequency natural hearing you may have after Cochlear Implant surgery while restoring access to the high-frequency sounds you’re missing, for a richerhearing experience. Hybrid Hearing is compatible with our wide Nucleus electrode portfolio.
How Hybrid hearing works
- The acoustic component, like a hearing aid, amplifies these sounds and sends them via the normal hearing pathway.
- At the same time, the processor converts high frequency sounds to digital information which is sent to the implant under the skin.
- The implant sends electrical signals down the electrode into the cochlea, stimulating the nerve fibres.
- This nerve response is sent to the brain, where it is combined with the response from the amplified sounds from the acoustic component into a perceived sound.
Use Your Natural Hearing with Cochlear™ Hybrid™ Hearing.
Cochlear Hybrid Hearing* helps those with high-frequency hearing loss (also known as ski slope hearing loss) or those who have some hearing, but still miss many sounds. If you are able to hear low-pitched sounds, but are not able to hear high-pitched sounds like children’s voices and birds chirping, even when using hearing aids, Hybrid Hearing may be a solution. The Cochlear Nucleus Hybrid Implant System is the first FDA-approved solution to use Hybrid Hearing to help treat this type of hearing loss.**
*The Acoustic Component should only be used when behavioral audiometric thresholds can be obtained and the recipient can provide feedback regarding sound quality.
**The Hybrid L24 implant is approved in the US only for adults 18 and older. The Cochlear Nucleus Hybrid acoustic component is not compatible with the Kanso Sound Processor. The Kanso Sound Processor is not intended to be used by Hybrid L24 Cochlear Implant recipients who receive benefit from the acoustic component.
Cochlear Hybrid Hearing. Combining the best of two proven technologies.
Innovation is the basis of what we do, and our Hybrid Hearing* Solution is an example of this focus. Hybrid Hearing is the combination of two proven hearing technologies. One amplifies the low-frequency natural hearing you may have after surgery, and the other restores access to the high-frequency sounds you’re missing. If you’ve worn a hearing aid, you’ve experienced the first technology. It’s called acoustic amplification. An acoustic component can be attached to the end of the Nucleus® 7 Sound Processor to amplify the low frequency natural hearing you may have after surgery. The amplified sound is sent through the acoustic component down the ear canal and the natural pathway of hearing. At the same time, the sound processor converts high-frequency sounds you’re missing to digital signals and sends them to the internal implant.
*The Acoustic Component should only be used when behavioral audiometric thresholds
can be obtained and the recipient can provide feedback regarding sound quality.
